So what is our Walk and Talk all about exactly? How can Walk and Talk benefit you?
Walk and Talk is a group walking activity with a therapy dog designed to support six young people (aged 18-25) in Brighton and Hove who are experiencing social anxiety or isolation, or those who feel challenged by being in groups or meeting new people.
The activity is made up of 4 parts
- 1-to-1 meeting for each young person with a counsellor to discuss any concerns.
- The six young people will go for a walk in Stanmer Park (approx 2-3 hours) with two counsellors, the activity coordinator and a Right Here volunteer. There will be ice-breaker games and discussions along the way.
- 1-to-1 meeting for each young people with a counsellor to reflect on their personal experience.
- Everyone from the walk meets up again to reflect on the walk, what everyone learned from the experience, and the connections that they made with each other.

• Walking has been shown to improve self esteem, relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduce stress, relax your mind and even boost your mood.
• Walking, particularly in pleasant surroundings and with other people, offers the perfect opportunity for relaxation and social contact.
• A report by the Faculty of Public Health states that ‘access to nature can significantly contribute to our mental capital and wellbeing’ and that ‘safe, green spaces may be as effective as prescription drugs in treating some forms of mental illnesses’.
